Carlos Cruz-Diez

About the artist

French artist of venezuelan origins, Carlos Cruz Diez (Caracas 1923) lives and works in Paris since 1960. He is one of the main representatives of optic and kinetic art, an art movement that raises awareness on the instability of reality. Thanks to his research, he became one of the greatest thinkers of color of the XXth  century.

The discourse of the artist is based on the chromatic phenomenon conceived as an autonomous reality that evolves in space and time, without the aid of shape or support, in a present continous. His works are exhibited at permanent collections of prestigious institutions such as:

Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), New York

Tate Modern, Londres

Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris

Centre Pompidou, Paris

Museum of Fine Arts, Houston

Wallraf-Richartz Museum, Cologne

In my artwork, color appears and disappears over the course of the dialogue established between space and real time. At the same time, undeniably arises the fact, that the acquired information, as well as, the knowledge memorized through our life experiences, are not, probably, certain...at least in part.

On the other hand, it is possible that thanks to color, view as an “elementary vision” without pre established meaning, we may dream about other sensible mechanism of understanding, more subtle and complex than those imposed by the cultural conditioning and the mass information of the contemporary societies.
